The Trials and Tribulations of a Global Pandemic in 2020 – Rosalee Estridge

A global pandemic, utterly devastating. A virus to end all viruses. With almost 97,000 confirmed deaths worldwide and 1.6 million cases, the world is slowly coming to a standstill as people are lost to the virus left, right and center. Whilst medical teams throughout the globe are putting themselves at high risks to help relieve others of theirs. Yet, the younger generations are all ‘Bored at home’. We state on social media we’re ‘Going insane’ as we’re forced to stay home and that ‘Quarantine is driving us crazy’. Ironically we state this as we all live in large, comfortable and providing homes. With food, electricity and plenty of running water. We say this as all we do to pass the time is scroll aimlessly through social media and be unproductive. When there are people scattered amidst the globe who have access to not a single one of these things and are fighting to stay alive, stay safe, and as healthy as possible.
But they aren’t complaining. We take for granted what we have and in times like this, a global crisis, it shows. Everyone’s saying, celebrities who live in multi-million dollar houses have stated being at home is like ‘Painfully boring’, but what about the mother of 5, in Sub Sahara Africa fighting for a chance to support her children but also keep them from the deadly virus roaming the streets?

It’s normalized and not questions as it’s just something we’re all used to seeing. When truly it’s beyond wrong. The portrayal of it in the media in which we are os absorbed and attached to. It’s force-fed down our throats into being a ‘Joke’ when really it’s just dehumanizing. We are all unbelievably lucky to have the privilege of self-isolating in a safe environment where our mental and physical well being is not at risk.

There are millions who wouldn’t be able to say the same, we have to be more considerate, we have to stay at home and we have to be grateful for what we have. We owe it to them and ourselves to hold more respect at a time like this.
